11 a.m. UPDATE
According to the Holt County, Missouri, Sheriff, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said a closure at I-29 may span into a multi-day cleanup event.
According to Buchanan County Emergency Coordinator Bill Brinton, a semi-truck hauling sulfuric acid overturned on I-29 in Holt County Thursday morning. Residents in the area were evacuated due to the exposure and to ensure safe cleanup.
Due to the nature of the load contained inside the overturned tanker, a specialized team and equipment are needed to complete the offloading, which the Sheriff's Office said is dangerous.
The Sheriff's Office said to keep the following in mind:
- Travel is going to take longer on secondary routes, so pre-plan your route and leave yourself additional travel time.
- Drive with additional caution, at slower speeds than normal and with some patience. Drivers that have never been on our roads may be confused or lost. Causing an additional wreck by trying to hurry them on helps no one.
- Harvest season is here, and the Sheriff's Office is urging caution as farm equipment enters and exits roads.
MSHP said a detour is in place for the event.
Vehicles traveling north on I-29 will exit onto U.S. 59 south of Mound City, Missouri. They will travel on U.S. 59 to Mound City, where they will re-enter I-29.
Vehicles traveling south will exit at Mound City onto MO Route 118 and travel east to Route PP. They will travel south on Route PP to U.S. 159 and go east. Vehicles will re-enter at I-29 at U.S. 59.
